About this education

Asthma care can be easier, safer and have a lower carbon footprint!

With significant updates to the Australian asthma management guidelines in 2025 and the release of the National Sustainable Asthma Care Roadmap, Australian primary care is at a turning point in how we approach this widespread condition. Most notably, these changes introduce existing preventer therapies (ICS/formoterol medication) as the preferred first-line option that offers improved patient outcomes while significantly reducing salbutamol over-reliance. This combined with the use of lower greenhouse gas inhaler devices can reduce the considerable environmental impact of asthma management.

Join Dr Mike Forrester and A/Prof Debbie Rigby, and leading GP educator Dr Anita Muñoz, for an essential update on asthma management in 2025. Gain actionable insights into new guidelines, the environmental impact of different therapies, and how to incorporate sustainability into clinical best practice. Explore risks of over-relying on traditional treatments, common misconceptions, and practical ways to optimise asthma control.

And don't forget to bring your burning questions for the live Q&A with our expert panel.

Key Takeaways

  • A new chapter in asthma management: Understand the new guidelines and the National Sustainable Asthma Care Roadmap.
  • Help patients live their best life: Explore the evidence basis of first-line ICS/LABA therapy and address common concerns regarding their use.
  • Prescribe with confidence: Refresh your knowledge on the combination medications and strategies for transitioning patients from SABA-only therapy where appropriate.
  • Reduce environmental impact: Discover the contrasting carbon footprint of pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) versus dry powder inhalers (DPIs) and how your prescribing habits can make a difference.

5

Describe an approach to offering patients the option of transitioning away from pMDIs and onto evidence-based and effective ICS-formoterol regimen via DPI.

1

Describe the latest asthma guidelines recommendations for the use of ICS-formoterol in mild, moderate and severe asthma (AIR-MART regimens).

By the end of this activity, you will be able to:

3

List available clinician and patient resources that assist in the implementation of ICS- formoterol asthma management regimen.

2

Outline an approach to managing acute asthma symptoms via the use of ICS- formoterol, including the option of lower footprint devices such as DPI.

4

Recall that hydrofluorocarbon propellants in pMDI are potent greenhouse gasses, with alternative devices available and newer propellants in development.

This was an excellent outline of dyslipidaemia management by both presenters. The best on the subject that I have been to in the last 2 years. Clear, concise and useful.
