Plasma Problems & Platelet Perplexities: A GP's Guide

Haematology & Oncology for General Practice CPD series

Deepen your understanding of non-cancerous haematological conditions and melanoma management.

This education has been developed by Praxhub in partnership with Icon Cancer Centre - one of Australia's leading providers of cancer treatment.

Through this important education, participants will receive timely updates on:

  • Plasma cell issues - what is MGUS and when should myeloma diagnosis be considered?
  • Diagnosing and managing patients with too many or too few platelets
  • Managing iron levels and optimising iron transfusions
  • Differentiating bruises and bumps - when is a haematoma a red flag?

Melanoma is often referred to as 'Australia's national cancer', with a patient diagnosed every 30 minutes.[1] It is the most common cancer for young adults 20-39 years old, and although survival rates have significantly improved, there is much more work to be done to prevent, diagnose, treat, and manage patients throughout their lifetime.

Blood and metabolic disorders contribute 1.3% of the total burden of disease and 4.1% of health expenditure in Australia[2], yet there is a scarcity of current CPD education available for GPs on non-cancerous haematological conditions.[3]

About this education

This GP-led education program has been developed for primary care professionals nationwide by leading specialists and Icon Cancer Centre in collaboration with Praxhub.

This webinar will provide an update on plasma cell and platelet disorders. This will include how they present in general practice, diagnostic considerations and will also outline the role of General Practitioners (GPs) in caring for patients with these haematological disorders.

Knowledge of the diagnosis and management of both plasma cell and platelet disorders is important for general practice as GPs commonly order tests, such as full blood count (FBC), which may identify occult disease. In the case of platelet disorders, the high risk of abnormal bleeding +/- clotting may also present with symptoms that are commonly seen by GPs. Plasma cell disorders can often go undetected and can contribute to other chronic conditions seen in general practice, such as osteroporosis, renal disease, heart failure and anaemia.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Outline the differences between plasma cell and platelet disorders.
  2. Classify plasma cell and platelet disorders through clinical diagnosis.
  3. Implement evidence-based patient management of plasma cell and platelet disorders.
  4. Summarise the relationship between MGUS and blood cancers or other serious diseases.

This webinar will provide an update on clinical approaches to bleeding and bruising, as well as focus on iron management in general practice. It will include how these issues present in general practice, diagnostic considerations and will also outline the role of GPs in caring for patients with related underlying haematological disorders.

Bruising and bleeding are common presentations in our communities and GPs are exposed to these issues regularly. Knowledge of the various aspects of the clinical assessment is vitally important in assisting a correct diagnosis to be made and therefore, to be managed correctly. Many patients also present with symptoms of, or test results confirming high or low iron levels. A key general practice responsibility is assessing and managing high/low iron conditions.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the clinical approaches for both elevated and low iron, in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
  2. Select the most appropriate investigations to assess presentations of bleeding and/or bruising.
  3. Identify patients who require referral to specialist haematology services presenting with bleeding/bruising.

Acute pain can develop into a chronic pain condition if it's not treated, or if the acute pain is poorly treated. The longer pain remains untreated, the greater the risk of pain becoming chronic.
