Topical Corticosteroids In General Practice

Potency, Placement, and Practical Prescribing

Earn up to 15 CPD hours across 2 integrated activities inc. 10 hours Measuring Outcomes (MO) and 2 hours Reviewing Performance (RP).

FREE CPD PROGRAM

This comprehensive CPD program provides you with the essential knowledge and skills for the safe and effective use of topical corticosteroids (TCS) in managing common dermatological conditions. Through a combination of a live webinar and an on-demand e-learning module (plus extended MO & RP activities), you'll deepen your understanding of TCS potencies, absorption factors, and the selection of optimal vehicles for different body sites.

The program emphasises practical application through case studies, empowering you to confidently determine appropriate dosages using fingertip units and establish suitable treatment durations and review processes to minimise potential adverse effects, leading to improved clinical practice.

You'll refine your ability to identify common corticosteroid responsive dermatoses (CRD), provide effective general skin care advice, and confidently prescribe TCS, directly addressing the prevalent issue of 'steroid phobia'.

Importantly, both the webinar and e-learning module include accredited measuring outcomes (MO) and reviewing performance (RP) elements, helping you to apply and extend your learning directly in your clinical practice and track the real-world impact of changes on your existing patients.

Integrated Activities:

Description:

Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are used widely for a number of skin presentations including atopic eczema and psoriasis. Safe and effective use relies on a knowledge of appropriate potency for both the condition and the body site affected, optimal vehicle for the TCS, appropriate duration of use and fingertip unit dosing and ensuring timely review. Working through cases, the learner will develop and refine that knowledge and have the opportunity to have questions answered by a subject matter expert.

Learning outcomes:

  1. List relative potencies of different TCS preparations and factors affecting absorption
  2. Describe optimal vehicle for the TCS according to body site affected
  3. Describe appropriate fingertip unit dosing for different parts of the body
  4. Determine the optimal potency TCS for different parts of the body
  5. Describe appropriate duration and review of treatment with a TCS to minimize risk of adverse effects

This activity offers up to 2.5 unique CPD hours:

  • RP: 1 hr
  • EA: 1.5 hrs

The series offers an additional 5 hr Measuring Outcomes activity

Integrated Activities:

Pre-Webinar Reviewing Performance (RP) Activity

This webinar is enhanced with a recommended but optional pre-webinar activity - approximate duration 1 hour.

Your responses will provide valuable insights to the presenters, who will share these findings at the live event - making the webinar even more relevant and beneficial for all participants. We encourage you to complete this pre-webinar activity by clicking the 'RP Activity' button on the registration page.

Measuring Outcomes (MO) Mini-Audit Activity

Through a structured process of data analysis, this Measuring Outcomes mini-audit aims to optimise your TCS prescribing and ultimately improve patient outcomes in dermatological conditions.

The activity focuses on refining knowledge and practices related to appropriate duration and dosing, selection of suitable potency and vehicles, and addressing patient and professional concerns regarding TCS side effects.

You will also learn strategies for utilising practice recall systems for effective follow-up and review.

Integrated Activities:

Description:

This interactive module describes identification of common corticosteroid responsive dermatoses (CRD), general skin advice and effective use of topical corticosteroids (TCS). Steroid phobia- a reluctance to use effective regimes of TCS due to an unfounded belief in frequency of side effects- is well recognised amongst patients, parents and healthcare professionals including GPs.

Combating this reluctance requires GPs to have a sound knowledge of relative TCS potencies, factors that affect absorption, optimal vehicle for the TCS, appropriate dosage using fingertip units and effective duration of use. Using case studies, diagrams and photos, the GP will work through the above and by the end feel confident that they can diagnose common corticosteroid responsive dermatoses, prescribe appropriately and educate patients and parents on effective use of TCS.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Identify and differentiate common corticosteroid responsive dermatoses (CRD).
  2. Describe general skin care and options for topical management of CRDs including optimal delivery formulation (lotions/cream/ointment).
  3. List relative potencies of topical corticosteroids
  4. Determine safe and effective topical corticosteroid use for commonly encountered clinical conditions.
  5. Develop an awareness of ‘steroid phobia’ and strategies to manage it.
  6. Describe fingertip unit calculation dosing of topical corticosteroids.
