About this collection
Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) is a debilitating inflammatory skin disease, characterised by recurrent hives and/or swelling that persists for six weeks or more without an identifiable cause. For patients, the journey to an accurate diagnosis can be a long and frustrating one, often taking up to two years. The persistent itch and unpredictable nature of flare-ups have a profound impact on quality of life, frequently leading to sleep disturbance, anxiety, and social withdrawal. By improving clinical knowledge of this challenging condition, healthcare professionals can significantly shorten the diagnostic process, reduce patient distress, and deliver effective care that restores quality of life.
This collection of CPD activities has been developed to provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary educational pathway for managing CSU. Recognising that each health professional plays a unique role in the patient journey, we have organised tailored education for dermatologists, immunologists, general practitioners, and pharmacists.
From advanced management strategies for specialists to practical diagnostic and referral guidance for primary care, these activities equip clinicians with the latest evidence and practical skills. This coordinated approach to upskilling ensures a more seamless and effective care pathway, leading to better outcomes for patients living with CSU.

Thursday 5 March 2026, 7:30-9:00pm AEDT
Description:
Recurrent weals are a frequent reason for GP visits, yet many patients with Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria are misdiagnosed as having allergy, eczema, or dermatitis, or experience delays in reaching a definitive diagnosis. This often leads to unnecessary investigations or repeated short courses of oral corticosteroids.
This webinar provides a clear, practical framework to help you distinguish CSU from its key mimics using lesion behaviour, pattern recognition, and minimal investigations. Through 3 case studies of increasing complexity, you’ll learn how to recognise hallmark features, avoid common diagnostic pitfalls, and identify when symptoms suggest an alternative diagnosis or warrant specialist referral.
Learning outcomes:
-
Identify the hallmark clinical features of CSU and differentiate it from its common mimics, while recognising red flags that suggest other systemic or autoinflammatory conditions.
-
Apply simple, evidence-based diagnostic tools—such as lesion duration, pattern recognition, UAS7 and UCT—to confirm CSU and rule out alternative causes in primary care.
-
Use a structured, stepwise approach to initial management, recognising when ongoing symptoms, red flags, or atypical features indicate the need for specialist referral.
GENERAL PRACTICE eLEARNING MODULE

General Practitioner

Prof Michaela Lucas
Immunologist
Description:
CSU is a challenging condition that significantly impacts a patient's quality of life. As the first point of contact for these patients, GPs are in a unique position to improve outcomes through early diagnosis and appropriate management.
This activity provides practical strategies to confidently differentiate CSU from other conditions. Participants will gain the skills to apply a structured approach to care, from assessing disease activity with validated tools to implementing the latest treatment guidelines.
Ultimately, this course will empower GPs to optimise patient care and improve referral processes for complex cases.
Learning outcomes:
-
Recognise the key clinical features of Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) and differentiate it from other urticarial conditions.
-
Utilise diagnostic and assessment tools to confirm a diagnosis and monitor CSU severity in primary care settings.
-
Implement effective first-line management strategies for CSU and identify appropriate referral pathways for patients requiring specialist care.

CPD Accreditation ID: AXXXXXXXX
This activity has been accredited for 1.0 hr of Group 1 CPD (or 1.0 CPD credit) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 1.0 hr of Group 2 CPD (or 2.0 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
Ideal for:
-
Pharmacists
-
Pharmacy assistants
Consultant Pharmacist
Immunologist
Description:
Community pharmacists are often the first healthcare professional patients consult for skin conditions like urticaria. This activity will equip pharmacists with the essential skills to confidently manage patients presenting with hives by learning to recognise the signs of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) through effective history taking, differentiate between acute and chronic presentations, and recommend appropriate over-the-counter treatments. Participants will also learn to provide crucial education on treatment adherence and symptom management, and identify the red flags that necessitate referral for medical assessment. This module will empower pharmacists to enhance their role in supporting patients with CSU, leading to improved health outcomes and better management of this chronic condition.
Learning outcomes:
-
Define Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) and differentiate it from acute urticaria and inducible urticarias.
-
Describe the treatment pathway for patients diagnosed with CSU
-
Recognise medicines and factors that can exacerbate CSU symptoms.
-
Explain the pharmacist’s role in CSU management, including symptom screening, patient education, and referral pathways to optimise patient outcomes.
-
Discuss the impact of CSU on patients’ quality of life, including effects on sleep, daily activities, and well-being.
SPECIALISTS eLEARNING MODULE
Immunologist
Optional Group 2 and Group 3 CPD education also available - see module for details
Description:
Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) is a complex inflammatory skin disease characterised by recurrent wheals and/or angioedema lasting for six weeks or more. It significantly impacts patients' quality of life, causing distress through sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression. Given the diagnostic delays that can average up to 24 months and the challenges in managing antihistamine-refractory cases, there is a critical need for specialists to stay abreast of the latest clinical evidence. This module provides dermatologists and immunologists with an essential update on the international guidelines to improve diagnostic accuracy and shorten the patient's journey to effective treatment.
Learning outcomes:
-
Evaluate the latest evidence on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of CSU, including refractory cases.
-
Apply advanced treatment strategies, including the appropriate use of biologic therapies, to achieve optimal control of CSU symptoms.
-
Develop individualised management plans for patients with CSU, addressing comorbidities, quality of life concerns, and long-term follow-up.
