About this education
Fatigue and poor sleep are among the most common presentations in general practice¹ – but distinguishing true sleep disordered breathing from the broader differential is far from straightforward.² Miss it, and a patient's chronic disease burden goes unaddressed. Over-refer, and you create unnecessary burden on both patients and diagnostic systems.
This two-part CPD webinar series gives GPs the clinical tools to get it right. Presented by sleep medicine specialist Dr David Cunnington alongside GP moderator Dr Kate Davey, the series covers the full patient journey – from refining pre-test probability and applying screening tools with confidence, through to selecting the right diagnostic pathway, interpreting sleep study reports, and determining next steps in management.
Whether you're looking to sharpen your approach to the fatigued patient or build greater confidence around sleep study interpretation, this series offers practical, evidence-informed learning designed for the realities of general practice.

Description:
Fatigue is one of the most common undifferentiated presentations in general practice,¹ and sleep disordered breathing is just one of many diagnoses within a broad differential. Because patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are more likely to report fatigue or lack of energy than classic sleepiness, knowing what to test for, in what sequence, is of paramount importance.¹⁻²
This webinar gives GPs a clear framework for identifying who is genuinely at risk – covering risk stratification, the use and limitations of screening tools, and how to build pre-test probability in routine consultations. Special attention is given to atypical presentations, including women and non-obese patients, who are frequently missed under traditional diagnostic frameworks.
Learning outcomes:
-
Analyse the role of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) in patients presenting with fatigue
-
Identify atypical presentations of SDB, specifically within lean and postmenopausal populations
-
Evaluate the clinical significance of Comorbid Insomnia and Sleep Apnoea (COMISA) and its impact on the management of chronic comorbidities
-
Apply Austroads fitness‑to‑drive guidelines to patients with suspected or confirmed SDB, clarifying the GP’s role in risk assessment, counselling, and documentation.

Part 1: CPD Webinar Recording w. Q&A
Tuesday 2 June 2026
Description:
Once a patient has been flagged as a candidate for sleep apnoea investigation, the next challenge is choosing the right diagnostic pathway and acting on the result. This webinar covers sleep study types and their clinical indications, Medicare rebate eligibility, and how to interpret reports in a general practice context. Dr David Cunnington also addresses management options, referral decision-making, and the GP's ongoing role once a diagnosis is confirmed.
Learning outcomes:
-
Compare diagnostic sleep study options and determine their appropriate use based on patient complexity, clinical risk, and Medicare rebate eligibility criteria.
-
Recognise key findings in sleep reports, with emphasis on pulse oximetry and oxygen desaturation patterns relevant to overall clinical risk
-
Apply a structured, patient‑centred framework to post‑test consultations, integrating patient symptoms, partner concerns, and clinical health risk
-
Describe the GP’s role in long‑term management of Sleep Disordered Breathing, including ongoing support to optimise therapy adherence.
