Sjögren's Disease Essentials For Rheumatologists
Essential, in-depth clinical updates on Sjögren's disease
About this education
While often presenting with the hallmark sicca symptoms of dry eyes and mouth, Sjögren's disease is a complex systemic condition where diagnostic delays and a significant burden of extraglandular manifestations can profoundly impact a patient's quality of life.
To help clinicians navigate these challenges, this comprehensive two-part educational series features the invaluable insights and clinical experience of leading Australian rheumatologists Professor Maureen Rischmueller and Associate Professor Frederick Joshua.
The content provides practical, in-depth insights into the latest evidence, from improving diagnostic accuracy to understanding the emerging therapeutic landscape. Each activity has been developed to Australian medical CPD standards, offering a combination of Educational Activity, Reviewing Performance, and Measuring Outcomes education.
The collection includes:
-
Live webinar: Mastering Sjögren's Disease: Real-World Case Studies, including a live Q&A with the experts - register now
-
eLearning module: Mastering Sjögren's Disease: From Complex Diagnosis to Therapeutic Frontiers - available now

Description:
This webinar provides a modern perspective on Sjögren's disease, the second most common autoimmune rheumatic disease. While often characterised by sicca symptoms, Sjögren's is a complex systemic condition where diagnostic delays are common and no approved disease-modifying drugs currently exist. This session moves beyond the basics to explore the nuances of diagnosis in atypical and seronegative presentations, the key pathogenic pathways driving the disease, and the critical role of risk stratification using tools like the ESSDAI. Through insightful clinical cases, this session will provide a comprehensive update on the mechanisms of emerging targeted therapies and the future of managing this challenging condition.
Learning outcomes:
-
Apply classification criteria for the diagnosis of Sjögren's disease, particularly in patients with atypical or seronegative presentations.
-
Assess systemic disease activity and mortality risk by utilising clinical tools.
-
Describe the key pathogenetic pathways that contribute to the clinical manifestations of Sjögren's disease.
-
Evaluate the mechanisms of action and therapeutic potential of emerging targeted therapies in the context of current clinical trials.

Optional category 2 and category 3 CPD education also available - see module for details
Description:
This activity provides a comprehensive clinical update on Sjögren's disease, tailored for specialists in rheumatology and immunology. Starting with the fundamental immunopathogenesis, the module explores the diverse systemic manifestations of the disease, current diagnostic criteria, and evidence-based management strategies. Participants will gain practical insights into applying a tiered approach to treatment, from managing glandular symptoms to escalating therapy for systemic involvement and will also review the emerging therapeutic frontiers for this complex autoimmune condition.
Learning outcomes:
-
Recognise the systemic nature, epidemiology and clinical burden of Sjögren's disease.
-
Explain the aetiology and immunopathogenesis of Sjögren's disease and its key differentiating features.
-
Identify the broad spectrum of glandular and extraglandular manifestations of Sjögren's disease.
-
Apply the current diagnostic criteria and investigative tools for Sjögren’s disease to support accurate and timely diagnosis.
-
Apply a tiered management approach for Sjögren's disease, escalating therapy based on disease severity.
-
Recognise emerging therapeutic approaches in Sjögren’s disease and their role in addressing unmet clinical needs.
