About this education
This Healthy Ageing CPD collection delivers a multidisciplinary approach to mental health care in older patients, designed specifically for GPs, nurses, and aged care workers. The program focuses on differential diagnosis, safe "start low, go slow" prescribing, and holistic management strategies to reduce morbidity in older patients.
The collection features three key educational components:
-
Clinical Webinar (GPs & Nurses): Evidence-based updates on diagnosing and treating depression.
-
Face-to-Face Meeting: A workshop focused on managing anxiety in the elderly.
-
Aged Care Worker Series: Four practical videos covering resident adjustment, identifying deterioration, and behavioural activation.
By upskilling the entire care team, this program aims to improve early detection and quality of life for older Australians.

Description:
Depression is not a normal part of ageing, yet it affects nearly 50% of residents in aged care and presents frequently in General Practice.¹ This webinar addresses the complexity of diagnosing older patients who often present with somatic complaints or memory concerns rather than sadness.
Participants will learn to differentiate between depression, delirium, and dementia—the 'Three Ds'—using clinical history and evidence-based screening tools like the Geriatric Depression Scale and Confusion Assessment Method. The session further explores management strategies, including 'start low, go slow' prescribing principles, bio-psycho-social care planning, and when to refer to specialist services. The webinar concludes with an interactive Q&A session to discuss specific clinical challenges.
Learning outcomes:
-
Apply appropriate evidence-based screening tools to assess mental state and cognition in older adults.
-
Differentiate between the clinical features of depression, delirium, and dementia (the "Three Ds") to determine an accurate diagnosis.
-
Formulate a comprehensive bio-psycho-social management plan for older patients.
* Measuring Outcomes activity will be made available upon the conclusion of the live webinar.

Description:
Join us for an engaging evening at St George's Hospital Campus of St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne to explore evidence-based approaches for supporting the mental health of our ageing population. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition among older adults and are highly prevalent in residential care settings, often resulting in significant distress and disability. While anxiety is a frequent presentation in general practice, there are effective treatments available to improve patient outcomes.
This seminar provides a comprehensive overview of the presentation and assessment of anxiety disorders in late life, with a dedicated focus on effective treatment options that are available. Participants will engage in practical activities to observe and trial psychological strategies that can be immediately implemented in general practice or residential care settings.
Learning outcomes:
-
Identify and describe the way that anxiety may present in older adults.
-
Differentiate between major anxiety disorder diagnoses in late-life patients.
-
Consider what treatment options are available for anxiety in older adults.
-
Demonstrate the ability to apply brief psychological strategies to assist patients presenting with late life anxiety.
