Pain management may feel like a well-trodden path, but the Australian pain management landscape is changing. Is there something in the classic tale of three bears that can help GPs continue to meet the genuine needs of their patients with acute pain?
While the increased restrictions on analgesics in recent years have been important to reduce risk of harms to the public, they may have disrupted pain management practices for both patients and health professionals. The need to curb overuse of analgesics must be considered alongside the uptake of evidence-based strategies to avoid the undermanagement of pain and the risk of chronicity. After all, adequate acute pain management requires a multimodal approach of non-pharmacological strategies alongside the balanced use of analgesics – not so little that pain is uncontrolled, but not so much as to be problematic. Learn more in this module, including how over-the-counter options can help to actualise this approach.

Pain in children is often misunderstood, misdiagnosed and undertreated – but adding to the burden of treatment are the many parental misconceptions regarding the management of paediatric pain and fever. Fears of complications or adverse effects can lead to both unnecessary treatment with medicines as well as hesitation to treat when needed. However, even when parents do choose to medicate pain or fever at appropriate times, inaccurate dosing is a notable problem amongst Australian caregivers.
GPs need to be prepared to not only address the child’s needs, but to also effectively reassure and manage the parent. In this module, learn about how health providers can equip parents and carers with the correct information to make objective, evidence-based management decisions for acute pain and fever episodes in children.
